Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig

This is one of my favorites.  It's a mix of fiction and philosophy and tells the story of a father and son on a motorcycle trip across America.  The twist is that the protagonist is a recovering schizophrenic and as he ventures across America, he also ventures back into his dark past.  It's a slow read that serves as wonderful food for thought whilst using the engine of a motorcycle as a metaphor for life.
